Personal Interests

  • Paddlesport (canoe and kayak). I'm  a Level 3 Coach in both kayak and canoe, and have been for a number of years. Essentially it means I can plan, prepare and supervise trips in both craft on rivers upto and including Moderate White Water, and do so with Angus Canoe Club.

  • Family History. I have long been interested in my Family History, but since moving to Scotland to live and work seem to just end up entering dates of birth, marriage and death. I enjoy wandering round the graveyards looking at headstones or turning the pages of old registers, and am keen to record and share what I have learned with folk.

  • Local History. Since moving to Scotland I have taken a keen interest in more Scottish "things" than I might normally. With regard to Local History,  I enjoy finding out about some of the things that Brechin is famous for, other than it's football team! This spills over into our house and it's history!

  • Computing and Technology. You might expect that a Lecturer in Computing and IT would enjoy all things "gadget and geek" and you would be right! I particularly enjoy trying to integrate new technology into my (our) daily lives. Hopefully to everyone's benefit, but there are times I am not so sure ...

  • Longer term projects. There is never a dull moment and I wouldn't want there to be! And yes, I do have some projects I want to do that will take more time than I have at the moment. As the days go by I keep my "eyes open" for anything that might be able to contribute to any of my projects, projects such as: Recording the gravestones in the Brechin cemetary online to the benefit of anyone looking for the information; I have long been aware that I should write down the results of my Family History studies rather than have it just exist on my own computer; the RAF Regiment in Cyprus in the mid 1980's - not recorded in the official history, but I was there!
