Professional Interests

  • Teaching, Training and Learning. This has long been an interest of mine. From the early days of 1981 when I experieneced my first introduction to formal attempts at "teaching" someone, something, to today where I have postgraduate qualifications (my first degree is in Network Computing). My postgraduate research topic was Blended Learning and I have been involved in two main projects in that regard.

  • BYOD integration in the classroom. In some ways this is quite a topical subject just now. Clearly organisations can reduce their costs if their employees use their own device for work! If only it was as simple as that. There are many issues to be considered not just the security aspects that go with allowing personal devices to access company confidential data.

  • Networking and Technical Support. I have always enjoyed "fixing things" and I think this is one reason why I am so enthusiastic about the Networking and Technical Support disciplines. It is true to say that the platforms have altered and so have the operatimng system interfaces, but customer facing skills are still customer facing skills!

  • Web based solutions. The proliferation of all things Internet has seen an exponential rise in sites and services migrating to the World Wide Web. Many of these services have moved away from the traditional "advertise, educate, entertain, inform, sell" to such diverses offerings as Facebook,Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, Yammer ... Todays Internet User must be familiar with many of these apps and have a sound understanding of a diverse range of issues - cyber security is probably at the top of the list!
